Literacy

In this literacy section find ideas for written work, topical debates about what's in the news, local pictures to inspire story settings and story ideas inspired by ancient folklore. Learn about books set in Guernsey and the writers who were inspired by living here.  Perhaps Guernsey will inspire the setting of some of your stories.

Learn about the folklore behind the Creux es Faies (Fairy cave) at L'Eree. Legends tell of this prehistoric passage tomb as the entrance to fairyland.  Fairies from Guernsey folklore are not your typical fairies with sparkly wings.  There are naughty fairies, soldier fairies and green fairies with pointy ears. Write your own story about the fairies that you meet if you are brave enough to go inside.

What is it like when the sea smashes against the wall at Vazon when the tide is high?  Can you describe a west coast sunset?  How does it feel on Lihou island when no-one else is around? What is it like to walk along one of St Peter Port's winding cobbled streets?  Write about what you know and describe local story settings.

Do you know any famous books set in Guernsey?  The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society is now being read by people all over the world and is even being made into a film.  It is a series of letters between a writer and her editor set in World War Two.  Perhaps you have heard of some famous Guernsey writers or poets?  Victor Hugo is Guernsey's most famous writer and poet.  He wrote 'Notre Dame de Paris' and 'Les Misérables' as well as many other stories and poems, while he lived in Guernsey but what was it about Guernsey that inspired him?
